The Golden Circle

Iceland's most loved loop, three great landmarks and a warm soak, all within an easy day of Reykjavik.

HomeDestinationsThe Golden Circle

Iceland's most loved day route

The Golden Circle gathers three of Iceland's most famous places into a single loop of about 300 kilometres that begins and ends in Reykjavik. You can drive it in a day, yet it holds a rift valley where two continents pull apart, a geothermal field that sends hot water skyward, and a waterfall that drops in two great steps into a canyon.

Take it slowly and it becomes more than a checklist. Add a long geothermal soak, a volcanic crater lake and a greenhouse lunch, and the loop turns into one of the most rewarding days in the country, friendly, easy to reach, and beautiful in every season.

Easy to reach, easy to love

The loop sits just east of Reykjavik, so you can set off after breakfast and be standing in Thingvellir within the hour. Drive it yourself at your own pace, or join a guided day tour and let someone else watch the road while you watch the landscape.

Most travellers go counter clockwise, saving a warm soak for the end of the day. Keep a swimsuit and towel in the car, and leave room in the plan to linger at a viewpoint longer than you meant to.

Gateway: Reykjavik, about 40 minutes to the first stop
Best for: Waterfalls, geysers, history, geothermal soaks
Best time: Year round
Stay: 1 day, or 2 with extras

What to see and do

The places worth slowing down for.

🏞

Thingvellir National Park

A UNESCO listed rift valley where the Atlantic and North American plates drift apart, and where Iceland's first parliament met more than a thousand years ago. Walk the Almannagja gorge and feel the scale of it.

Geysir and Strokkur

The geothermal field that gave the world the word geyser. Strokkur performs faithfully, sending a column of hot water skyward every few minutes while the ground hisses and steams around you.

💦

Gullfoss

The golden falls, where a glacial river drops in two broad steps into a deep canyon, throwing spray and rainbows into the air. The viewing paths bring you close to its full power.

🌋

Kerid Crater

A vivid volcanic crater lake ringed by red and rust coloured slopes, an easy and photogenic stop that adds a splash of colour to the loop.

🍅

Greenhouse country

The warm farming villages of Fludir and Reykholt grow tomatoes and vegetables in geothermal greenhouses. Stop for a fresh greenhouse lunch you will remember.

🛀

A warm finish

Two natural pools sit right on the route. The Secret Lagoon at Fludir and Laugarvatn Fontana on the lake both turn the afternoon into the still point of the day.

Make it a longer journey

The Golden Circle pairs beautifully with the south coast and the warm villages around it.

From Gullfoss it is an easy continuation toward the south coast and its waterfalls and black sand beaches, or a short drive to the geothermal villages of Fludir and Hveragerdi for a soak and a greenhouse meal. Many travellers build the Golden Circle into a wider loop that drifts on into the Highlands in summer or down to the coast year round.

Good to know

Quick answers for planning your trip.

How long does the Golden Circle take?

You can drive the core loop in a single day from Reykjavik, with about three to four hours of driving in total. Give it a full day so you can linger at each stop, and consider two days if you want to add a soak, a crater lake and a greenhouse lunch.

Can I drive the Golden Circle myself?

Yes. The roads are paved and well marked, and the loop is one of the easiest self drive routes in the country. A guided day tour is a relaxed alternative if you would rather not drive.

What is the best time to go?

The Golden Circle is open and rewarding all year. Summer brings long daylight and green valleys, while winter wraps the falls and geysers in snow and adds a chance of northern lights on the way home.

What can I add to the loop?

Popular additions include the Secret Lagoon at Fludir, Laugarvatn Fontana, the Kerid crater lake, the Fridheimar tomato farm, and the steaming hot river hike at Reykjadalur above Hveragerdi.
